General Safety Tips

Great weather, sunny beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere are to be enjoyed, leave your winter clothing behind, but not your common sense! Keep these tips in mind:

Business is business- treat all business deals in Spain with the same caution as you would in the U.K. When doing work on your home, get written quotes from several companies before proceeding. Establish a payment schedule: usually 40 % at the beginning, 40% at mid point, and 20% upon satisfactory completion. It is a good idea to add a work schedule and completion date with a penalty clause for late termination.

DO NOT give large amounts of money to workmen.

DO NOT ring back companies that send you letters stating that you have won a large prize or holiday package. This is a scam.

DO NOT allow anyone to inspect your home. Water and gas meters are located outside the home. If you need a security system, you go to them and arrange an appointment. Be wary of anyone who comes to your home or telemarkets you. Always get receipts and make sure that it contains a business registration number or for individuals, their National Identity card or passport number and street address. If, uncertain, you should verify their identification.

Use established companies or individuals. Limited companies in Spain carry an "S.L." or "S.A." after their names. Just because a builder speaks English does not mean that they are professional.

Established individuals and companies have land lines (these numbers all start with 9) and offices. Spanish mobile phone numbers always begin with a 6. While most builders are on the go and use mobile numbers, it is best to know where they can be located.

DO NOT answer personal questions about wealth, e.g. how much rent you pay for your house or how much your house is worth. Although these may be innocent questions, no need to disclose too much information.

If it looks to good to be true - it is!

Spain is a lovely country and its people are warm and ingratiating. By using common sense and caution, just as you would at home, you will have a fantastic time.
