Many visitors come to the Costa del Sol on their own boats, or keep them in the area so that they can enjoy the sailing around the Mediterranean and the Straits of Gibraltar. It is also easy to hire different kinds of boats, jet skis, water bikes or even large leisure cruisers for the day. Marbella is home to one third of all sports harbours on the Costa del Sol.
There are always plenty of Spanish and foreign boats that come to stay during the winter along the Costa del Sol. There is limited mooring availability caused by the ever increasing number of visitors. It is advisable to plan well in advance. The Mediterranean is normally calm, with lively wind between the lighthouses of Calaburra and Cabopino and in the Straits of Gibraltar offering ideal conditions for sailing.
One of the most important in the Mediterranean, has 2,500 metres of mooring for cruise ships. In the year 2000, the Levante (eastern) quay has been substantially enlarged offering mooring capacity for cruise ships of any size or tonnage. The special development plan for Málaga's harbour, currently in progress, includes modern landing facilities featuring leisure attractions, shops, bars and restaurants that will be located at the entrance to the pier. The Málaga port is close to the historic centre of the city.
Along the coastline of the Costa del Sol going west to east, you will notice there are several major places where the rivers join the Mediterranean Sea.
Manilva is the western most coastal town in the Málaga province. The marina is Andalusian style and very picturesque. There are many good restaurants, bars and clubs in the town. The marina is fairly quiet, as the majority of boats choose to stay in nearby Gibraltar over the winter period.
